SDI invested £400,000 in a suite of new production equipment, ready to increase output. With demand showing no signs of slowing, the new machinery helps the production team cut and bend sheet steel faster. The next challenge for the team, was to find a place to house their new equipment.
Making space for growth
When space falls in short supply, the only way is up. SDI got in touch with Prodek to help draw up a plan to integrate the new machinery. With plenty of vertical space available, Prodek installed a mezzanine floor to double the production assembly area. Finished with safety rails, guarding, fire protection, two staircases, and pallet gates, the mezzanine is a complete production workspace.
The mezzanine floor is constructed from horizontal steel beams fitted to upright columns. Decking is placed on purlins, which span the steel beams, to create a stable, load-bearing surface. Spanning 295 m² the mezzanine creates a new floor at 3600mm from ground level. Encased in handrail, kicker boards, and a safety screening perimeter, the floor is accessible by one of two handrailed staircases or pallet gates.
The underside of the mezzanine floor is fitted with 295 m² of 60-minute fire rated suspended ceiling. 40 LED lights, 12 of which are emergency rated, are housed within the fire-rated ceiling, along with smoke detectors. The spaces above and below the industrial mezzanine floor are finished to a high standard, ready to meet increasing customer demand.
